UNECE R100 Battery Testing (REESS)
UNECE Regulation No. 100-03 Testing
EWVTA is a designated technical service of TRAFICOM - Transport and Communication Agency of Finland
ECE R100 is a major European requirement for the approval of road electric vehicles. The regulation outlines all safety tests that must be performed on Li-ion batteries for road vehicles of categories M and N with electric power train. For Electric Vehicles UNECE R100 is key requirement for making batteries and vehicles street-legal and is required for European Whole Vehicle Type Approval according to Regulation (EU) 2018/858 framework.
UNECE R100 regulation is also instrumental in global effort to harmonize regulations for motor vehicle and Li-ion battery safety.
EWVTA is ISO 17025:2018 Accredited to perform In-House UN ECE R100 Testing:
-
Annex 9A Vibration 7-50Hz / <10 m/s2 / 3 hours
-
Annex 9B Thermal shock & cycling -40 C /+60 C for 2.5days
-
Annex 9C Mechanical shock <28g <120ms
-
Annex 9D Mechanical integrity 100kN

Annex 9J Overcurrent protection
Who needs R100 testing
R100 testing is needed by manufacturers of electric vehicles in categories M and N, and by suppliers of traction battery packs and modules to them. It is also needed by converters and low-volume manufacturers seeking type approval for electrified vehicles. Battery suppliers often test early, so the pack arrives at vehicle approval with results already in hand.
Type approval support
As a designated technical service, EWVTA test reports support type approval through Traficom. We can coordinate the test programme with the approval process, which avoids repeat testing at a second lab.
What we need from you
-
Samples: REESS or representative subsystems, depending on the tests selected. R100 allows some tests on modules or subsystems where justified.
-
Documentation: REESS specification, BMS and protection functions, charge and discharge limits, and mounting and orientation in the vehicle.
-
Size limits: max specimen 1300 × 1100 × 1000 mm, 500 kg.
What you receive
-
ISO/IEC 17025 accredited test report per annex
-
Test photos, video of abuse tests, logged data
-
Report format suitable for the type approval file
Lead time
Typically 4 weeks after initial contact and test program confirmation.
FAQ
Can we test modules instead of a full pack? In several tests, yes, if the module or subsystem is shown to be representative. We agree this with you, and with the approval authority where needed, before testing starts.
Our approval authority is not Traficom. Can we still use your reports? Please contact us with your target authority. Acceptance of a technical service's reports is decided by the authority issuing the approval.
